Emma Kunz – Visionary Drawings
-
The publication coincides with Emma Kunz’s major exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in London, during spring of 2019. Emma Kunz, born 1892 in Switzerland, dedicated her life to researching the restorative energies of plants and minerals. From 1938, with the aid of her diving pendulum, she began making large-scale, abstract and geometric drawings. These were made primarily to support her divination and healing practice, yet Kunz predicted that her legacy of over 400 drawings would be seen and appreciated by future generations.

The photographic reproductions of the drawings, some measuring over 1 metre, were made over a number of decades with various techniques. This presented a considerable qualitative disparity and colour inconsistency of the reproductions. Having had the opportunity to view most of the presented drawings in person, the reproduction work was geared on matching the original artworks. A fine and delicate approach was required to sensitively reproduce the characteristic feel of the pencils and wax crayons. Often the colour is subtly modulated, with varying degree of intensity, creating a distinctive depth.
